PDAs—The Second Digital Revolution

Do you remember when computers were first coming out and changing the way businesses operated?  Pretty soon, it wasn’t just businesses—computers and the internet have changed the way that people live their everyday lives.

The same thing is happening again with PDAs.  PDAs, or Personal Digital Assistants, are mini computers that fit into the palm of your hand.  The capabilities of PDAs are practically unlimited!

In The Beginning

Personal Digital Assistants, also known as pocket computers or palmtop computers, did not always have such a wide array of features.  When the digital instruments were first introduced, they were designed to be merely personal organizers.  These personal organizers had a simple range of features, such as a notepad function, calendar, and calculator.

The Evolution Of PDAs

As PDAs became increasingly used for business purposes, more features were added to allow the user to have access to almost every form of communication available—right at their fingertips!  Today, PDAs can access the Internet, receive and send Emails, play mp3 files, create spreadsheets, play games, record videos, act as cameras, and even act a phones!

Standard Features

There are a few features that every PDA needs in order to function.  Typically, PDAs use a touch screen to enter data.  A stylus is used to interact with the touch screen.  For business use, PDAs typically have a full keyboard as opposed to a touch screen.

PDAs also have a memory card slot for storing information.  Most early PDAs did not have a memory card slot, but it has become a standard feature.  Personal Digital Assistants now typically have a Secure Digital (SD) or Compact Flash slot.  Some even have a USB port to accommodate USB flash drives.

The final standard feature of a Personal Digital Assistant is Bluetooth or WiFi for connectivity.  This is how the device is able to access email and the Internet anywhere, at any time.

Customizing Your Personal Digital Assistant

Just like your personal computer, there are many ways that you can customize your Personal Digital Assistant.  Custom software is available for download, so you can download features and settings that meet your needs and preferences.  Additionally, you can download your favorite games for your PDA as well.

The settings for the display on your PDA can be changed to allow for a custom picture, background, or sound.  Additionally, you can purchase a wide variety of external accessories that will set your PDA apart from the rest.

What Will They Think Of Next?

Five years ago personal computers were the thing to have.  Now, technology has provided a new tool for society to obsess about.  Whatever will they think of next?

Things To Consider When Looking For The Best PDA

It can be a daunting task to walk into a store that carries PDA’s and begin the shopping process.  For many consumers taking time to begin the research process at home can help them eliminate which systems may not be the best PDA for them.  Information about PDA’s is simple to locate by typing in the words personal digital assistant.  There will be many ads advertising the various products, but also plenty of places to read reviews on the products and what their capabilities are.

Some things to consider when looking at PDA’s are of course, cost. There are many similar PDA’s that can offer consumers almost the same benefits and the price can vary.  Be a savvy consumer and shop around to find the best deal.

Another consideration when talking about the best PDA for you is whether to get a palm or a pocket PDA.  Both have benefits and sometimes it is just a matter of taste.  A palm PDA can be less expensive, but may not be up to the capabilities of a pocket PDA.  A palm may have more free software available, easier to use and is known to be more of an organizer.

The pocket PDA may be more practical if you are tech savvy and want a model that is more of a computer.  Pocket PDA’s are known to crash more, so again if you’re comfortable with technology this may not be a disturbing event for you.  Some consumers begin with a palm PDA because it is less expensive and then move onto the Pocket PDA when they become more proficient with the device.

Selecting the best PDA for you really has to do with your own interests and abilities.  Talk to people that you know that have either type.  See what they feel is worked for them and how easy they were to use.  The best PDA is really about doing research into what type of product will fit into your life.  Check out the systems offered in stores and be sure to ask questions.

Once you’ve located the best PDA for you, keep in mind that your needs may change, be ready to upgrade and find out what kind of additional services you can get with your PDA.

Looking after your PDA to Keep Important Information safe

Everyone in business could use an assistant to keep track of appointments, to have necessary information always at the ready and to offer reminders of a task that needs done. Meeting reminders and other business-related alerts are often offered. Additionally, it should be available 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Not many can afford an assistant with those qualities so they use a PDA, short for Personal Data Assistant.

For many people, a PDA is for business use as they track their schedule, store important documentation and schedule alerts and notifications for many different aspects of their busy work life. However, since work is only part of a person’s life, a schedule should also be kept to track important events in your daily life as well. A PDA can help you stay on schedule whether it’s a meeting with the company president or time to attend little Johnny’s school play.

Too often people use two separate calendars, one for work and one for personal business. The problem comes in when the two schedules are not coordinated. Too many times a person will schedule something at work only to find out later it conflicts with a personal commitment. By keeping one schedule on your PDA, that business meeting should never have been made as the personal time would have shown up on the schedule.

Added Memory Helps Keep It Personal

Almost every PDA offers expansion slots for storage media and many times people will carry pictures of work-related issues or even of their kids and grandkids stored on a memory card. They may also use the cards to store larger files or spreadsheet metrics. By keeping them on a separate memory card the information doesn’t eat up the typically small internal memory built into many PDA units.

Many different companies produce a PDA with many of the same features and although they may have different basic operating systems, in most instances they can still communicate. This helps the exchange of information, which can be transferred from one unit to another quite simply. Nearly every file on a handheld PDA can be moved from one unit to another effortlessly.

As the PDA industry matures, more and more applications are being developed and many of the newer units from multiple manufacturers are equipped with wireless technology enabling the use of email and cell phone as part of the PDA technology. Coupled with GPS services, they can also be used as handheld navigational devices.
